What Causes Premature Skin Aging?

Premature skin aging is the visibility of aging skin like fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and sagging skin even before old age. It can happen as early as in our late 20’s or early 30’s, and become more apparent in our early 40’s.

But what is it that causes premature skin aging to happen and what can you do about it?

Here’s a look at some causes of Premature Skin Aging:

1. Long term sun exposure

The no. 1 culprit of premature skin aging is hands down, exposure to UV rays from the sun, which can be damaging in the long-run as it breaks down collagen and elastin in skin. So if you haven’t incorporated sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, then you really should! Wear sunscreen that is at least SPF30 even if you’re indoors during the day. Your skin will thank you.

The MF3 Total Block is an opaque SPF50+ sunscreen that is effective in shielding skin from UVA and UVB rays.

2. Poor diet

A diet that is high in refined carbs, sugar and processed food is known to contribute to the acceleration of the aging process. So, they’re not kidding when they said, “you are what you eat”! Eating a well-balanced meal every day and foods that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals is not only good for your insides but also your outside (skin).

3. Smoking and drinking alcohol

Smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol can cause premature skin aging as they deprive the body and skin of necessary nutrients to look and feel healthy. The toxins in cigarette smoke is damaging to the cells in our body, whereas alcohol is dehydrating, and too much of it can cause skin to lose its firmness and sag.

If you are a drinker and/or smoker, and are thinking to detox and rejuvenate your body, the MF3 Lifestyle Combination range can assist in your journey to a healthier you.

4. Poor sleep quality

Having lack of sleep hinders the body from regenerating cells, which leads to increase aging and decreased skin barrier function. Hence why they call it, “beauty sleep”. Improve your sleep quality by improving poor sleeping habits that disrupt good sleep such as drinking caffeinated beverages just hours before bedtime, binge watching shows late at night and not sleeping at the same time every night.

5. Stress

If you are constantly suffering from stress and anxiety, this can trigger inflammatory responses in the body which speeds up the aging process. The best way to go about this is by identifying your stressors and learning to manage your stress effectively. This can be by meditating, venting to a friend, taking a short break (or a long one)- Whichever works for you. Do not be afraid to seek for professional help if you need to.
