In general, cigarette smoking puts harm on almost every organ in the human body, leads to diseases and decrease overall health of a person. In the United States alone, cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths annually. Smokers have higher risks to develop heart disease, stroke, as well as lung cancer. Effects of smoking are being summarized below:

  • Difficulty to become pregnant for women, also affecting baby’s health before and after birth.
  • Affects morphology of sperms in men, reducing fertility and increase risks for birth defects and miscarriage.
  • Affects health of bone, also greater risk for broken bones.
  • Affects health of the teeth and gums, leads to tooth loss.
  • Increase the risk of cataracts, an eye condition where the lens of the eyes turns cloudy, blocking the vision. It may lead to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a small spot damage near the center of the retina.
  • May cause type 2 diabetes mellitus, higher by 30-40% for smokers that are active than non-smokers.

E-cigarettes or vape are battery-operated devices that heat up a liquid and convert it into an aerosol. The solutions in e-cigarettes normally contain vegetable glycerine/propylene glycol as main ingredients, added nicotine, wide range of flavourings as well as additives.

Nicotine is a highly addictive substance. It is extremely difficult to stop using it. Studies have evidently proven that long-term e-cigarette smokers are exposed to as much nicotine as individuals who smoke cigarettes on a regular basis.

  • Weight loss:  Cigarettes and coffee are often associated with weight loss. Instead of taking a good diet, some would prefer smoking.

Lifestyle Factors

  • Identify when cigarettes craving appear: On average, a cigarette craving can last up to 5 In that 5 minutes, plan strategies so that the craving would not be satisfied.
  • Plan to stop smoking: Make a reminder for yourself by listing out the reasons you should quit smoking.
  • Social support: Look out for local community support to stop smoking. Get someone to be your ‘Quit Buddy’ to support and hold you accountable during your journey to quit smoking.
  • Eat good nutrition: A US study discovered that food such as cheese, fruits and vegetables would make cigarettes taste bad. Instead of smoking after meal, consider to do the dishes straight away, reduce the chance of smoking.
  • Drink water and juice: Fizzy drinks, alcohol, cola, tea and coffee make cigarettes taste better. Instead, swap into water and juices would affect their need to smoke.


Common natural remedies for smokers:

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncturist would insert acupuncture needles in the ear where the needles remain for 20 minutes. Some acupuncturists would provide tiny balls (size of the tip of ballpoint pen), taped with invisible tape to the ear. Smoker would be instructed to press upon the ball to stimulate the acupuncture point when craving for cigarettes comes.
  • Ginseng: Ginseng may prevent nicotine-induced release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is the cause of good feeling after smoking.
